Basic Biographical Details Name: | Arthur Hay Livingstone Mackinnon | Designation: | | Born: | 22 April 1870 | Died: | 3 November 1937 | Bio Notes: | Arthur Hay Livingstone Mackinnon was born in Aberdeen on 22 April 1870, the son of Lachlan Mackinnon, advocate, Aberdeen, and his wife Margaret Blaikie. He was educated at Aberdeen Collegiate School. He attended Gray's School of Art from 1886-1889and was articled to Matthews and Mackenzie in August 1887, moving to London as an improver with Col Sir Robert William Edis in September 1890 and subsequently being promoted to assistant. In 1893 he made a study tour of Italy and Greece and returned to commence practice at 75 Union Street Aberdeen in October the same year. He passed the qualifying exam in London in 1894 and was admitted ARIBA on 11 June, his proposers being Edis, Arthur Cates, and Lacy William Ridge. Early in his career he secured the business of the Clydesdale Bank in north-east Scotland, providing him with a fairly steady stream of business. By 1907 he had moved to 245 Union Street which remained his office until his death in 1937; his house was at 8 Rubislaw Den South. He was admitted FRIBA in early 1932, proposed by James Brown Nicol, Robert Gordon Wilson and Alexander Marshall Mackenzie.
Mackinnon served as Secretary of the Aberdeen Society of Architects from 1898 until 1913 and as President from 1914 to 1915 and from 1931 to 1932.
Mackinnon died on 3 November 1937, leaving moveable estate of £22,867 6s 8d. He was an architect of considerable refinement but was never aggressive about securing business, perhaps because in later years at least he was rather well off. He was remembered as having a very engaging self-deprecatory personality. Of his best house, Kippie Lodge, he observed ' Oh no, nothing to it at all: just a box designed around their carpets'. His wife, Eliza Thomson Henderson, the eldest daughter of John Henderson, manager of the North of Scotland Bank, Aberdeen, whom he married in 1904 had predeceased him. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 75, Union Street, Aberdeen, Scotland | Business | 1893 | Before 1907 | | | 245, Union Street, Aberdeen, Scotland | Business | Before 1907 | 1937 | | | 8, Rubislaw Den South, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | Before 1914 | 1937 | |
