Basic Biographical Details

Name: Charles Howitt
Designation:
Born:
Died: 1875
Bio Notes: Charles Howitt would appear to have been architect to the Lews Estate in Stornoway which was acquired by Sir James Matheson in the 1840s. He seems to hvae remained in Lewis for about five yars and then moved in the early 1850s to become architect to the Buccleuch estate in which post he remained until his death in 1875. His address is given on some drawings as Drumlanrig Mains. His relationship to the Nottingham architectural family of that name is unknown, but he was probably seconded to Drumlanrig from the Duke of Buccleuch's Boughton estate in Northamptonshire.
