Basic Biographical Details

Name: George Wilson
Designation: Architect
Born: 1845
Died: 13 September 1912
Bio Notes: George Wilson was born in 1845, the son of George Wilson, farmer and his wife, Mary Ford; sources vary as to his place of birth, some stating Simprin, Berwickshire, whilst in the 1901 census he declared he had been born at Oldhamstocks, East Lothian. He was educated at Swinton School and Coldstream Academy before being articled to Leadbetter & Smith in 1862, remaining there for four years and subsequently becoming an assistant to David Bryce where he remained for eight years. In or about 1874 he moved to the office of Robert Rowand Anderson where he made the acquaintance of the young Sydney Mitchell, twelve years his junior and then an articled apprentice; when the latter set up independent practice in 1883 Wilson moved to join him as assistant. Sometime before this he made two study tours, the first lasting six months spent travelling in France and Belgium and another of four months spent in England and Ireland. In 1887 Sydney Mitchell took Wilson into partnership.

Wilson's wife Isabella Calder was born in Leith c.1851 and the census of 1901 records that they had five children living at their home, 17 Braidburn Terrace, at that time: Alice, twenty-five years old; Mary M, twenty-two; Lionel and Anthony, both seventeen; and Eric, whose age is not specified.

Despite having a very busy practice and a range of eminent clients Sydney Mitchell never sought membership of the RIBA. However George Wilson was elected FRIBA on 2 December 1907, his proposers being Hippolyte Jean Blanc, David Robertson and John Watson. Not long after his election to Fellow he appears to have retired from the professional life, ceasing to 'take an active part in business matters'. Having been 'in indifferent health for some time' died in St Andrews on 13 September 1912. He was buried at Merchiston Cemetery on 19 September, leaving moveable estate of £30,405.
