Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Laing Hay
Designation:
Born: 1862 or 1863
Died: 1939
Bio Notes: Robert Laing Hay was born in Fife in 1862 or 1863. In 1881 he was an architectural draughtsman, his address being Abbot Street, Dunfermline. He moved to Newcastle about 1890 and practised in Northumberland until at least 1911. He married Mary Rowland Lambert in 1895 and they had one son who was born in 1901. The 1901 census gives his occupation not only as an architect but also as sanitary specialist. He appears to have given up architecture as his occupation in 1911 is given as dealer in 'clima' (indecipherable). In directories he is listed as an architect in the alphabetical list of names though not under professions from 1895-96 until 1920. This suggests that he was always working in some practice in Newcastle, possibly for a local authority in their schools division. From 1925-1930 he is recorded as living in Louvaine Place but with no profession given and he had therefore probably retired by this date.

He died in Edmonton, Middlesex in 1939 aged 76. Only one job is known from his period in Newcastle.
