Basic Biographical Details

Name: John Charles Hay
Designation:
Born: c. 1840
Died: 1 February 1925
Bio Notes: Little is known of John Charles Hay but he was born about 1840, the son of Charles Hay, farmer and his wife Margaret Bryson. He commenced practice as an architect and surveyor at 3 Hanover Street, Edinburgh by 1867 moving many times thereafter within Edinburgh. He acted as President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association at an unknown date. He seems to have formed a partnership with his son sometime around 1892 but this appears to have lasted only for a few years. (One of his sons was E G Hay who appears to have been living at 85 Polwarth Gardens in 1925, but this is not necessarily the son with whom he formed the partnership). He was married twice, first to Mary Soutar and second to Jane Amelia Coutts. He may have retired to Errol which is where his death was registered. He died on 1 February 1925, aged 85.
