Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Charles Hay | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1840 | Died: | 1 February 1925 | Bio Notes: | Little is known of John Charles Hay but he was born about 1840, the son of Charles Hay, farmer and his wife Margaret Bryson. He commenced practice as an architect and surveyor at 3 Hanover Street, Edinburgh by 1867 moving many times thereafter within Edinburgh. He acted as President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association at an unknown date. He seems to have formed a partnership with his son sometime around 1892 but this appears to have lasted only for a few years. (One of his sons was E G Hay who appears to have been living at 85 Polwarth Gardens in 1925, but this is not necessarily the son with whom he formed the partnership). He was married twice, first to Mary Soutar and second to Jane Amelia Coutts. He may have retired to Errol which is where his death was registered. He died on 1 February 1925, aged 85. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 3, Hanover Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | Before 1868 | | May also have been his house | | 16, Royal Exchange, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1869 | 1871 | May also have been his house | | 108, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1872 | 1874 | May also have been his house | | Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1875 | | May also have been his house | | North Merchiston House, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1875 | | May also have been his house | | 108, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1876 | | May also have been his house | | 4, Charlotte Place, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1877 | 1883 | May also have been his house | | 140, Princes Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1884 | 1888 | May also have been his house | | 28, Rutlland Square, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1889 | | May also have been his house | | 7, Hope Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1892 | | Address of John C Hope & Son - may also have been his house | | 37, Queensferry Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1894 | 1896 | Address of John C Hope & Son? - may also have been his house | | 73, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1897 | 1898 | Only John C Hope from this year on - may also have been his house | | 31, Millar Crescent, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1900 | 1901 | May also have been his house | | 12, Perth Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1902 | 1904 | May also have been his house | | 45, Frederick, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1905 | 1907 | Last entry - perhaps retired at this time? - may also have been his house |
