Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Hall & Co
Designation:
Born: Before 1846
Died: Before 1884
Bio Notes: Robert Hall was a builder in Galashiels and founder of the dynasty of Halls. He established the firm in about 1840. Robert was joined by his nephew John who appears to have had some kind of training in architecture or at least an inclination to be more involved in desiging buildings and the firm became Robert Hall & Co about 1846. Andrew Murray was taken into partnership at some point, presumably after the death of Robert Murray, but the practice title was changed to J & J Hall after John's son, also John, was taken into the firm in or before 1884.

NB 'Buildings of Scotland' says that Robert Hall & Co were responsible for masonry and joinery work at Nether Caberston, which was built after Robert Hall & Co seem to have ceased. This needs further research for clarification.
