Basic Biographical Details

Name: Hall & Henry
Designation:
Born: 1874
Died: February 1914
Bio Notes: Jesse Hall was born in 1820 at Bowden, Roxburghshire and apprenticed to his brother Robert, a building contractor in Galashiels in 1835. He met William Nixon in the course of business there and became his clerk of works first in Edinburgh and then in St Andrews. He returned to Edinburgh in 1849, but in 1850 came back to St Andrews as manager to the local gas company and set up architectural practice, an appointment which he combined with supervision of the University buildings and the ancient monuments which were in government care. In 1862 Hall took on as an assistant David Henry, born in Carnoustie in 1835, who had previously been apprenticed as a cabinetmaker. After a period gaining wider experience in Edinburgh, Henry became a partner in 1874 but Hall withdrew from the partnership in 1884 to concentrate solely on his responsibilities as Superintendent of Buildings for the government and from 1890 onwards for the University Court. He retired in 1905 and died in December 1906.

Henry continued the practice alone until 1913 when he took William Hill Walker into partnership. Henry died in February the following year, and William Hill Walker enlisted for war service, continuing the business under his own name on his return from the war in 1918.
