Bio Notes: James Goalen was a pupil of Alexander Maclean of Edinburgh and was in practice first at 42 Duke Street, Leith in 1864-65 and then at 8 Morton Street, Leith in 1868. Subsequently he moved to various other addresses in Leith. No further details are yet known.

James Goalen's practice was continued by James Thomas Goalen OBE, JP; from 1921 he was in partnershipwith J Cameron Gibson; a city office was opened at 25 Frederick Street in 1930. They seem to have abandoned architecture after about 1931.
