Basic Biographical Details Name: | Thomas Lindsay Gray | Designation: | | Born: | 1905 | Died: | 1979 | Bio Notes: | Thomas Lindsay Gray was born in 1905, the son of George Gray of Broughty Ferry, and was educated there at Grove Academy. He studied engineering at University College Dundee, beginning his career with the Anglo-American Oil Company in Aberdeen. He then joined the office of Robert Gibson in Dundee, training as a civil and structural engineer, and opened his own office at India Buildings, Dundee in 1930, moving to a larger office at 7 Ward Road in 1932. Prior to that, in 1928, he had married Janet Muriel Leslie Laird, daughter of William Laird, with whom he was to have two sons and one daughter.
Gray was primarily an engineer concerned with industrial projects particularly for Baxter Brothers, Low & Bonar and D C Thomson & Co, largely succeeding to Robert Gibson's practice, and in his earlier years engaged staff as necessary to deal with the larger architectural projects.
Gray was an enthusiastic territorial and served in Burma during the Second World War, reaching the rank of Colonel. He was appointed OBE in 1944. After the Second World War he was usually known as Colonel Gray and was a founder member and president of the Dundee Burma Star Association. Although of only average height, his slim distinguished appearance, assured military style, great structural competence and imperturbability commanded the confidence of corporate clients and churchmen alike.
By 1964 he was a representative of the Dundee chapter of the RIAS.
