Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Richard Fleming | Designation: | | Born: | 10 January 1865 | Died: | 5 April 1936 | Bio Notes: | James Richard Fleming was born on 10 January 1865. He was articled to James Salmon & Son in Glasgow from 1880 to 1884, remaining with them as a draughtsman for a year after completing his apprenticeship and studying a the Glasgow School of Art and Technical College. From 1885 to 1888 he worked on the Glasgow Paisley and Kilmarnock Railway under the supervision of Robert Douglas Sandilands of Thomas & Sandilands, who had taked a salaried post while that newly founded partnership found its test in the recession. In early 1889 he moved to Belfast where he spent just under three years as assistant to Robert Graeme Watt. His movements over the following few years are unclear but he subsequently moved to London, where he joined the architectural staff of HM Commissioners of Prisons, Whitehall, in 1895. Whilst still there he passed the qualifying exam in June 1897 and was admitted ARIBA on 29 November of that year, his proposers being William Forrest Salmon, John Slater and Benjamin Ingelow.
