Bio Notes: Francis Farquharson was born in Auchterarder on 21 October 1805. He moved to Haddington in 1833 or 1834 to be clerk of works for the erection of the town's County Buildings. He later worked in the same capacity on Monkrigg House. He took over the business of Frank Balsillie and was practising as an architect and builder in Haddington in 1853. He was married to Jessie Richardson. In 1863 he became provost of Haddington.

Farquharson's sons, John (1847-1933) and Robert (1849-91) joined their father in partnership. The practice name became J & R Farquharson prior to 1875. Farquharson senior died on 16 December 1878 at Haddington; his wife survived him, dying on 19 August 1888.

The younger Farquharsons continued the business until 31st December 1889 when Robert resigned "owing to the state of his health". Robert died on 5th September 1891 at the age of 42. His obituary in the East Lothian Courier states that he had been suffering from mental depression and shot himself "in a fit of mental aberration".
