Basic Biographical Details

Name: John Fulton
Designation:
Born: 1829
Died: 1882
Bio Notes: John Fulton worked in Dundee as Burgh Engineer from 1852 to 1868, when he resigned and was succeeded by William Mackison.

Fulton left Dundee to become Town Surveyor of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1868 after a major re-organisation of the department. In 1871 he was also made Borough Engineer. His most notable work in Newcastle was to lay out Leazes Park. In 1877 AM Fowler was appointed to take control of the whole department in yet another re-shuffle leaving Fulton without an official post, but responsible for parks and road repair. Relations with Fowler were difficult and the Council was in dispute about how best to proceed. In the end Fulton was dismissed in 1881 and his colleagues, who felt he had been badly treated gave him a testimonial of £220. He then emigrated to Texas to farm and to undertake engineering work. He died there in 1882.
