Bio Notes: Robert Leuchars Hardie was a cousin of Dundee architect William Gauldie. He was born in about 1878 at Smithson, Greenock where his father was governor of the poorhouse. The family moved to Birmingham when he was about 12 years old and he completed his schooling there. He was then apprenticed to a Birmingham engineer.

By 1901 he had moved to North Berwick to continue his training with his uncle, John William Hardie. He lived with his uncle's family at 1 Marmion Road. He also studied during this period at Edinburgh College of Art. He later became an an assistant in an Edinburgh office. He moved to Dundee in 1906 and in 1908 (W S Gauldie) or 1909 (Bailey) Gauldie took him into partnership.

Hardie's health failed in 1923 and he died in October 1924. Sinclair Gauldie described him as a very good architect of the Arts and Crafts school and the buildings known to be his bear that out. He is described in his obituary as having a 'thorough manner' and a 'retiring disposition'.
