Basic Biographical Details

Name: John Hinton Gall
Designation:
Born: 1848
Died: 19 January 1929
Bio Notes: John Hinton Gall was born in 1848 and articled to 'William Ormiston … and his partner … G Cousin' in Edinburgh from 1864 to 1868, attending classes at the Royal Institution; at this time Ormiston and George Cousin are believed to have been working in the office of George's brother David, taking responsibility for his practice whilst he was abroad trying to recover his health. Gall subsequently assisted in offices in Galashiels, Glasgow and Edinburgh before becoming assistant to William Lawrie of Matthews & Lawrie in Inverness in 1872. When Lawrie died in 1887, the Inverness practice was inherited by Gall, who had been his chief assistant since 1872 and who continued the business under his own name, Matthews withdrawing completely from that branch of the firm.

Gall was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, his proposers being Alexander Ross, Robert John Macbeth and William Laidlaw Carruthers. He applied for Fellowship of the RIBA in March 1928 at the very late age of 79 ½, and was admitted a few months later. Outwith his profession Gall was a keen sportsman and described as the 'oldest and most noted bowler and curler in the capital of the Highlands'.

He died on 19 January 1929, the year after his nomination to Fellowship of the RIBA. The practice was continued by his son, Herbert.
