Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Jonas Gildard
Designation:
Born: 3 May 1868
Died:
Bio Notes: Robert J Gildard was thought by Alexander Wright to be the son of Thomas Gildard, but since the latter was described as single on his death. Robert J Gildard seems to have been the son of James Gildard (b.1830) in Bonhill and who was a hotel keeper in Ayr and Argyll. He may have been a brother of Thomas Gildard. He was closely associated with Tait Conner and Henry Mitchell, went out to South Africa and worked there with Conner and Sir Herbert Baker; he had previously worked in the Edinburgh City Architect's Office under Robert Morham on the Fire Station. He also exhibited a sketch design for a public hall at the RSA in 1900.
