By 1901 he is described in Census records as a house factor. He practised in Motherwell. His son also John Wilson trained as an architect and worked with his father for many years. However in about 1921 the younger Wilson emigrated to California to run a fruit farm. The older Wilson emigrated there to join his son, (born about 1878) in 1927. In the Motherwell Times in November 1935 there is a report that his third son George Findlay Wilson who was a engineer's draughtsman, died at Bonny Brae, Capella, California on 7 November 1935. The older John Wilson is described as 'late' by that date. Wilson was an active a member of the EU Congregational Church in Motherwell from 1874.
The younger John Wilson continued in some capacity in the practice Wilson & McGill. It is possible that he was simply a sleeping partner.
