Basic Biographical Details

Name: Campbell & Hislop
Designation:
Born: 1908
Died: 1924
Bio Notes: John Archibald Campbell was born in 1859 and articled to John Burnet & Son in Glasgow in 1877. He left in 1880 to spend three years at the Atelier Pascal, Paris, but returned to form a partnership with John James Burnet in 1886. The partnership, known as Burnet Son & Campbell, was dissolved in 1897 when Campbell entered into independent practice. He was elected FRIBA on 11 June 1906, his proposers being Burnet, John Keppie, David Barclay and C J MacLean. In 1908 he took his chief assistant, Alexander David Hislop, into partnership. Born 2 March 1876 Hislop had been articled jointly to William James Anderson and Alexander Nisbet Paterson. The partnership with Campbell proved brief as the latter died on 19 July the following year. Hislop continued the practice under the same name as sole practitioner until 1924. Some sources seem to indicate that the name Campbell & Hislop was continued for a lot longer - until the 1960s.
