Basic Biographical Details

Name: David John Chisholm
Designation:
Born: 1884
Died: 27 July 1949
Bio Notes: David John Chisholm was born in 1884 and educated at George Watson's College. He was articled to Peddie & Washington Browne on 3 September 1901, and whilst there he studied at Heriot-Watt College and Edinburgh School of Art, from which he gained a travelling scholarship. This enabled him to spend six months of the year 1907 touring Scotland on the National Art Survey. He left Peddie & Washington Browne the following year to tour England on the strength of another College of Art scholarship, after which he joined Hippolyte Jean Blanc as assistant. In 1910 he moved to London to work for James Glen Sivewright Gibson, from whose office he entered the RA Schools in 1911. In the following year, 1912, he moved briefly to the LCC Architect's Department Schools Division prior to joining Sir Arthur Blomfield & Sons, perhaps with a recommendation from Browne, and while in their office he passed the qualifying exam in that year. He was admitted ARIBA on 3 March 1912, his proposers being Gibson and Sir Arthur's sons Charles James Blomfield and Arthur Conran Blomfield.

At the Royal Academy Schools he won the Gold Medal which brought a further travelling scholarship. He was in Italy in 1914 when he was recalled to Britain as a territorial. He served with distinction in the London Scottish and later received his commission in the Royal Engineers. He was mentioned in dispatches in June 1915 and awarded both the Military Medal in October 1916 and the Military Cross in June 1918. At the end of the war John Wilson took him on to the staff of the Department of Health, but within a very short time he rejoined the Peddie practice, and he replaced Sydney Houghton Miller as third partner after Miller left the firm in 1927. He was an exceptionally fine draughtsman with a profound knowledge of Gothic and Classic detail. Those in the office in the late 1940s remembered him as 'extremely artistic' and notably helpful to younger staff with encouragement and advice despite his rapidly failing health. Chisholm first appears in Post Office directories in 1931 as being a partner in the Dick Peddie & Walker Todd practice. Prior to that he is listed under his own name.

In 1936 the partnership of Jamieson & Arnott was dissolved as a consequence of the enforced retirement of Ernest Arthur Oliphant Auldjo Jamieson through ill health. That partnership was then less busy than it had been and for reasons not entirely clear James Alexander Arnott left to practise alone. Jamieson's son, George Lindsay Auldjo Jamieson (born 1905), then sought a merger with Dick Peddie & Walker Todd. He brought to Dick Peddie & Walker Todd the Sydney Mitchell & Wilson archive, much of the Jamieson & Arnott archive and those clients who were his father's rather than Arnott's. The practice title then became Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson, letterheads of that time bearing the subhead 'incorporating Sydney Mitchell & Wilson' to leave no doubt that the Jamiesons had had the dominant financial interest in the Jamieson & Arnott partnership.

The practice conditions during the Second World War resulted in the merger of the Dick Peddie Todd & Jamieson and the Richardson & McKay practices in 1942, John Ross McKay having secured a lot of war work, perhaps more than he could find staff for. McKay quickly became the leading partner, particularly so after the death of Walker Todd on 29 April 1944, after which the firm continued as Dick Peddie McKay & Jamieson.

Chisholm died on 27 July 1949. He was survived by his widow and a daughter.
