Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Morton | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | | Bio Notes: | George Morton appears to have been a native of Greenock. His first appearance in the Greenock Post Office Directories is in 1887-1888, but at that date he does not appear to be working as an architect as he is not listed under Trades and Professions as such. Two years later he had clearly formed a partnership with William Menzies of Alexandria taking over the practice of John Boston after the latter's death and perhaps working as an assistant to Menzies. It may be that the partnership involved Menzies because Morton was as yet unqualified or at least not trained in architecture. At this date he was living at 86 Union Street, Greenock. In By 1898-1899 he is listed as being 'of Boston Menzies & Morton'. In 1901-1902 he had moved house and was living at Westbrook, Kirn, Dunoon but moved to Rosehhill, Argyll Road, Kirn in 1904-1905.
Despite the fact that little is known of the partners, the firm of Boston Menzies & Morton was very able, the Greenock Masonic Temple being quite Burnetian and the Queen's Hotel at Kirn inventive Arts and Crafts with Art Nouveau touches. A strong Art Nouveau influence is also present in the flowing tracery of Clune Park Church at Port Glasgow. Their offices remained at 11 William Street, Greenock at least into the 1920s, but Morton is believed to have died in 1915 or shortly thereafter. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 86, Union Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland | Private | 1887 | After 1890 | | | Westbrook, Kirn, Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland | Private | 1901 or 1902 | | | | Rosehill, Kirn, Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland | Private | 1905 or 1906 | | |
