He subsequently worked as an assistant in the offices of P Byrne and Henry Astley Darbishire and as an assistant draughtsman in the War Office in Dublin. He commenced independent practice in 1869 in Windsor and in 1881 took into partnership James Crombie, who had been working in partnership with his brother Alan Burgess Crombie in Dumfries prior to that date. Their office was at Lyons Inn Chambers, 303 Strand.
