Bio Notes: James Thomson was born in Edinburgh about 1784. He moved to Dumfries to convert the chapel in Buccleuch Street into a courthouse. He remained in Dumfries and in due course became convener of trades. He designed various simple churches in Dumfriesshire.

He died of cholera during the epidemic of 1832. As a member of the recently formed Board of Health he was involved in trying to combat this. His son George was an engineer and died at Poona in 1842, aged 27. Thomson's widow, Mary Gordon, died in 1879 in her 91st year at Fairfield, Angus.
