Basic Biographical Details Name: | James Jackson Craig | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1841 | Died: | 30 April 1932 | Bio Notes: | James Jackson Craig was born c.1841, the son of Robert Craig, farmer and his wife Isabella Jackson. (Census records show that a James Jackson Craig was born in 1852 in Canongate, Edinburgh, which may well be the case and the 1841 date is incorrect). He commenced practice in partnership with James Corrie at 125 West Regent Street in 1874 or 1875 under the practice title of Corrie & Craig and on 15 September 1875 he married Lilias Morton, the daughter of a potato merchant, James Morton at Stonelaw Farm, Rutherglen. This Rutherglen connection brought him the appointment of burgh surveyor there.
In the difficult conditions after the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank in 1879 the partnership was dissolved, Craig reopening at 175 St Vincent Street and in Rutherglen, ultimately taking his son Morton Craig into partnership as J Jackson Craig & Son.
Craig died of cystitis at 1 Burnside Road, Cambuslang on 30 April 1932. He was buried in Glasgow Necropolis. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 125, West Regent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1874 or 1875 | 1879 | | | Fallside, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private | 1875 * | | | | Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Business | 1879 or 1880 | | | | 175, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1879 or 1880 | After 1900 | listed as civil engineer and architect, 1888 | | Overwood, Burnside Road, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private | 1891 * | | 1888 PO Directory gives Overwood, Burnside, Rutherglen. | | 219, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | Before 1904 | After 1925 | | | 1, Burnside Road, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Private | 30 April 1932 * | | Place of death |
