Bio Notes: John McClure was born on 11 March 1914, the son of James Steel McClure, draper, and his wife, Thomasina Robina Muir. He attended classes at Glasgow School of Art from 1931, obtaining his diploma with distinction in June 1937. During the period of his studies he also spent three years gaining practical experience in an unspecified architect's office, possibly that of Weddell & Inglis of Glasgow, as he gave their office as his business address in his nomination papers for Licentiateship of the RIBA. He was admitted LRIBA on 6 December 1937, his proposers being Thomas Harold Hughes, William James Smith and Eric Alexander Sutherland. His private address is give as 'Barnweil', Prestwick, Ayrshire.

McClure resigned from the RIBA in December 1978. By that time he had retired, having latterly worked for Strathclyde Regional Council, and he was still living in Prestwick, at 23 Midton Road. He had never ventured to London.

McClure died on 4 June 2001 aged 87 at the Biggart Hospital Prestwick, survived by his wife, Margaret Shankland Bone Dunlop, a retired art teacher, and at least one daughter.
