Basic Biographical Details Name: | Jessie Elizabeth Kennedy (Mrs Bassett) | Designation: | | Born: | 4 January 1910 | Died: | 10 October 2001 | Bio Notes: | Jessie Elizabeth Kennedy was born in Aberdeen on 4 January 1910, the daughter of Thomas Robert Kennedy, master draper, and his wife Sophia Hutchison. She studied at the School of Architecture, Robert Gordon's Colleges, Aberdeen from September 1926. During the course of her studies she was apprenticed to T Scott Sutherland from 1928 to 1931. She obtained her diploma in 1931 and an endorsement in 1932, and passed the Professional Practice exam in 1933. In September the following year she secured an appointment as assistant in the LCC Architects' Department in London. She was admitted ARIBA on 11 March 1935, her proposers being Sutherland, R Leslie Rollo and John Gibb Marr. Her nomination papers do not state a business address but it is likely that she was still with the LCC at this time.
In 1940 Jessie married Samuel John Francisco Ferrer Bassett, then a lance sergeant with the Royal Engineers, who was stationed at St Mary's Barracks, Chatham. She practised after her marriage and was still a member of the RIBA in 1946 and was living in London. Her entries ceased thereafter. However her husband who qualified LRIBA in 1945 continued to practice. They were still living at the same address in 1950 but had moved to Leicester by 1960. He had ceased to practice by 1979.
Jessie returned to Scotland at some point - perhaps after the death of her husband. She died aged 91 at Abbeyside Nursing Home, Abbeyside, Institution Road, Elgin, on 10 October 2001. Her married daughter who lived in Elgin registered her death. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 60, Queens Road, Finsbury Park, London, England | Private | 1935 * | | | | 19, Belgrave Terrace, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | c. 1940 | | Parental home? | | 61, Bassett Road, London, England | Private | 1946 * | | | | Chipperfield, Rosemead Drive, Oadby, Leicester, England | Private | 1960 * | After 1970 | |
