Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Cameron | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1845 | Died: | 29 April 1932 | Bio Notes: | John Cameron was born about 1845 in Peterhead, the son of John Cameron, quarrier, and his wife Jane. He served his articles as a mason in Aberdeen and practised as such for some years thereafter. In 1871 he was working, along wqith a large group of mason and other tradesmen from Aberdeenshire as a mason on the Dhuheartach Lighthouse Works at Fidden, Argyll. Probably about 1880 he emigrated to South Africa where he carried on a contracting business for some time. He returned to Scotland 'with his partners' and commenced business as a builder in Aberdeen. He appears in Post Office Directories from 1897 as a builder and surveyor of house property and from 1902 as an architect and licensed valuator.
In the latter year he formed a partnership with George Watt as Cameron & Watt. They were prolific designers of houses, probably some speculatively, from about 1900-1906 and after. The partnership was responsible for the commercial buildings on the west side of St Nicholas Street and the houses from Holborn Street School to Willowbank Road.
The partnership with Watt was dissolved in 1910 and at some point thereafter Cameron took his son, also John (born 1885), into the practice. The firm of J & J Cameron was 'responsible for the erection of many houses in new residential districts in Aberdeen'. The relationship between the firm of J & J Cameron and Cameron & Matthew is as yet uncertain.
Cameron died on 29 April 1932. He was survived by his widow and his son and daughter. He left moveable estate of £12,490. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | | | | | Braemar Place, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | 1891 | | | | 11, Balmoral Place, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | 1899 | | | | 3, Louisville Avenue, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | Before 1901 | 1932 | |
