Basic Biographical Details Name: | Henry Greig Badenoch | Designation: | | Born: | 22 November 1847 | Died: | c. 1916 | Bio Notes: | Henry Greig Badenoch was born in Aberdeen on 22 November 1847 and educated at Union Row Academy in the same city. He was articled to John Russell Mackenzie on 9 November 1863, and remained as an assistant for three years after completing his apprenticeship. Badenoch then worked as an assistant in Leeds in 1871, and thereafter in Nottingham from 1872 to 1875 as assistant to Henry Tully, then moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne as assistant to Frank West Rich (1840-1929) whose main client was Sir William (later) Lord Armstrong of Elswick Works. In 1879, Badenoch commenced independent practice in Newcastle, where he went into partnership with James Bruce (born 1857), who had returned from Australia and had previously been a fellow assistant in Rich's office, in October 1892. Badenoch was elected FRIBA on 2 December 1907, his proposers being Arthur B Plummer, William Glover and J Walton Taylor. He was a Member of the Northern Architectural Association and MSA 1895. The practice seems to have specialised in Presbyterian churches, particularly in the Newcastle area. The Badenoch & Bruce partnership was dissolved by mutual consent on 18 November 1910, apparently because Badenoch had become seriously ill. He was ‘laid aside by illness’ for the greater part of 1911, but resumed practice in 1912. His eldest son appears to have maintained the practice during his illness but emigrated to Toronto shortly thereafter.
Badenoch died in late 1916 or early 1917 (his death was registered between January and March of the latter year) and Bruce in 1918.
