Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Newlands | Designation: | | Born: | 1853(OR1855) | Died: | 10 March 1930 | Bio Notes: | William Newlands was born in 1853 (or 1855 - sources vary), the son of George Newlands, master jeweller, and his wife Bertha Muir and was articled to William Railton of Kilmarnock, from January 1869 until March 1873, during which period he attended Kilmarnock School of Art. At the end of his apprenticeship he moved to Glasgow to join David Thomson as an assistant, which enabled him to study at Glasgow School of Art and the Haldane Academy. From February 1879 to 1880 Newlands worked briefly for Alexander Adamson and then for Bruce & Sturrock before returning to Kilmarnock to join Gabriel Andrew as partner in the latter year.
In 1889, suffering from severe ill health, Newlands ceased his practice, dispersed his drawings among his clients and set sail for Cape Town, not expecting to return. After some years, however, he recovered, and by 1895 he had returned to Kilmarnock and to his partnership with Andrew. The firm's work in the late 1890s and early 1900s is quite an imaginative free Baroque.
Newlands suffered another bout of ill health around 1910, retiring from practice for eighteen months, but by the beginning of 1912 he had once more recommenced business, seemingly alone. He was admitted LRIBA on 24 June of that year, his proposers being John Bennie Wilson of Glasgow, and William Cowie and James Kennedy Hunter both of Ayr.
Newlands died iat Tour Gardens Farm, Klimaurs Ayrshire on 10 March 1930 aged 75. He was single. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 22, Rennie Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland | Private/business | 1912 | | |
